“Leave No Footsteps Behind” is more than just a collection of songs. It is the shared experience of those whose narrative of suicide become a reality. As the protagonist accounts for his feelings of life and his past, he slowly decays back into the earth from which he came. Throughout the EP emerges a stark realization of the complexity of life and the bittersweet permanence of suicide. Without the ability to turn back, the protagonist must come to terms with his fate and accept the uncompromising nature of existence: questions that remain unanswered, things that will never change, and wishes that will never be granted. There is no longer a future, just a past that he desires to erase both symbolically and literally by leaving it all behind and covering the tracks. There is but one thought that resonates as he takes his final breath: “Leave no footsteps behind.”

“Who I Used To Be” finds us at the crossroads of our former selves and our current selves, where the past and present converge and define our lives. This EP focuses on the shifting mindset of the individual over time, and how our mistakes, naivety, and regrets guide our futures. Using a combination of songs written years ago and songs written recently, the lyrics and music portray this shifting mindset in its most essential form. The listener is taken on an introspective journey that becomes increasingly familiar throughout the EP. This is the story of all our lives.

“A Most Reasonable Death” is a profound reminder of the beauty that exists in every terrible tragedy. Acoustic and ambient guitars blended with soft clean vocals are the backdrop to what can only be described as a narrative of realization and empathy at its deepest level. The objective of the lyrics are to confront depression and suicide without turning to the comfort of cliches and false hope. Rather, this song aims to illuminate why many turn to suicide in their darkest times. The intense introduction of the full band with heavy, passionate screams do justice to what this song seeks to portray. There are no answers, but only the opportunity to understand and illustrate the depth of feeling we experience as humans. The overarching message of this song: you are not alone, I understand you.

Lyrically inspired by philosophers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Emil Cioran, Arthur Schopenhauer, Thomas Ligotti, and more, this EP pulls no punches in illuminating the treacheries of life. Ripping metal and post-hardcore riffs infused with brutal screams and shimmering clean vocals revive that old-school, mid-2000’s sound that inspired Thoughts Before Prayers to make music in the first place. A sober analysis of our shared experience in this desolate universe and the reality of our humanity greets the listener from the very first line: “Hatred thinly veils our frailty.”

“Bound By Blindness” is a reflection on our lives and the world as we see it today. Although the past has an effect on us in every area of our lives, who we are today is what matters most. Alongside this positive message is an interpretation of what is wrong in the world today, and how we can change and improve the future. By recognizing the blindness we are bound to in the past, we have the opportunity to heal and take responsibility moving forward. To understand the futility of dwelling on the past and to make no excuses for being better today is the core message of this heavy, melodic, and passionate album.
